Nurul Islam

Mechanical Engineer

Nurul’s career started in the Aerospace industry, working in multiple roles (NDT, maintenance, quality management). His passion for research and teaching led him to do a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) and over the last 10 years Nurul has taught Engineering and Product Design in various schools, colleges and research institutes in the UK.

Due to his outstanding contribution to the department, Nurul was awarded a Scholarship from UCL to complete a Masters in Systems Engineering: Management of Complex Projects. He also undertook an internship at CERN, to work on particle accelerators.

Nurul is a strong believer that engineering should be taught ‘more practically’ across the curriculum. As a STEM ambassador he runs practical engineering workshops and worked on the T-Levels as a consultant. He has designed and set up many makerspaces, engineering workshops and physics/electronics labs in the further education sector.

He particularly enjoys teaching students about emerging technologies such as 3D printing, laser cutting, CNC machining, robotics, and drone technology. He is also a certified bicycle mechanic.

His interests – when he is not tinkering – include Astronomy, Boxercise and Cycling (with lots of coffee breaks).
